Skriv under namninsamlingen idag!

    .

O blessed Virgin, Mother of God, look down in mercy from Heaven, where thou art enthroned as Queen, upon me, a miserable sinner, thine unworthy servant. Although I know full well my own unworthiness, yet in order to atone for the offenses that are done to thee by impious and blasphemous tongues, from the depths of my heart I praise and extol thee as the purest, the fairest, the holiest creature of all God’s handiwork. I bless thy holy name, I praise thine exalted privilege of being truly Mother of God, ever virgin, conceived without stain of sin, Co-Redemptrix of the human race. I bless the Eternal Father who chose thee in an especial way for His daughter; I bless the Word Incarnate who took upon Himself our nature in thy bosom and so made thee His Mother; I bless the Holy Spirit who took thee as His bride. All honor, praise and thanksgiving to the ever-blessed Trinity, who predestined thee and loved thee so exceedingly from all eternity as to exalt thee above all creatures to the most sublime heights. O Virgin, holy and merciful, obtain for all who offend thee the grace of repentance, and graciously accept this poor act of homage from me thy servant, obtaining likewise for me from thy divine Son the pardon and remission of all my sins. Amen.

How finite persons can give an infinite gift of self

“Where is life more conscious of its potency than in the pleasure of giving itself away? Must we not say that life is never more alive than when it gives itself up and dies over into the other?… Man is finite, but he is capable of giving himself infinitely.”

Hans urs von Balthasar, Explorations in Theology V: Man Is Created

How can we, finite human persons, give ourselves away infinitely?

We can only do this by living in union with Christ the Bridegroom. Christ is infinite – infinite love, infinite self-gift. This Lent, I have been pondering how it is possible for me, a finite creature to give myself away in imitation of Christ. My musings have been fed by the writings of the theologian, Hans Urs von Balthasar. As I write this article, I am putting my thoughts into written words for the first time. I hope that my pondering and questioning will inspire your own pondering.

    What is kenosis?

Kenosis is a Greek word that literally means, “self-emptying”. In Christian theology, it refers to Christ’s act of self-emptying in the Incarnation. St. Paul used the word kenosis in Philippians 2:5-7, “Have this mind among yourselves, which was in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men.”

Christ’s first act of emptying Himself was His entering into the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary at the Annunciation/Incarnation event. He poured Himself out, emptying His divinity into our humanity. And again on the marriage bed of the cross, He physically, spiritually, and emotionally poured Himself out in love. Sometimes I forget that I am not Jesus, that I am not the infinite God who can continually give and give and give of myself. I have limits, physical, mental, and emotional. I am not created to give myself away in totality as He was and is.

I can use the gift of free will to freely and totally give the gift of myself in prayer and sacrifice. The act of pouring oneself out in love, of emptying oneself – Kenosis – is not just for God, not just for Jesus but for all persons. I am called to a pouring out of self for the good of others in union with Christ, for the life of the world. I cannot imitate Christ’s perfect and infinite kenosis, but I can enter into it, participate in it.

I cannot physically pour myself out without limit, but I can pour myself out in prayer with no limits. Only Christ, who is the infinite God can lovingly pour Himself out and never become empty. I must allow Christ to continually empty me of all that is not of Him and fill me with His Infinite Self if I desire to enter into His kenosis. Now, all that I suffer as well as all of the graces and joys I receive, I can pour out in Christ.

I can make a gift of myself to Him and in union with Him, I become gift for others. I can infinitely pour myself out because I live in union with Christ, Infinite Love.

Christ first act of emptying Himself was His entering into the womb of the Blessed Virgin Mary. He poured himself out and emptied His divinity and filled our humanity. Again on the marriage bed of the cross, He physically and spiritually and emotionally poured Himself out in love. Sometimes I forget that I am not infinite love as Jesus is. I am not the infinite God who can continually give and give and give of myself. A human person has limits. have limits. Although, I cannot give myself away in totality as He can, I can use the gift of free will to freely and totally give the gift of myself in prayer and sacrifice. The act of pouring oneself out in love, of emptying oneself – Kenosis – is not just for God, not just for Jesus. You and I were created and called to a pouring out of self for the good of others in union with Christ.

I think we often fear that if I give myself away, if I pour myself out for others, I will end up empty. We must remember this foundational truth of the spiritual life: if we are in union with Christ, allowing Him to love us, we will never be empty.

As He loves us, He purifies us, empties our hearts of all the attachments that clutter them, heals the wounds that are obstacles to our being filled to our capacity. We were created with the capacity to be filled by God Himself – Capax Dei. Sitting at the feet of the Divine Bridegroom Who gives Himself without limits to His brides, we become one with Him. He pours Himself out into us, and it is only by this in-filling that it becomes possible to pour ourselves out in love for others. Now, we need not be afraid of ever being empty. The giving and the receiving interpenetrate and become one and the gift is infinite.

Kenosis… perhaps that is my word for the new year. I need the Lord to continue teaching me not to feel guilty for the pain or the exhaustion that just makes it impossible to physically pour myself out anymore. The giving of self does not end when I must respect my humanity and physically stop. Spiritually, in union with my Bridegroom, the gift keeps giving.

How to Recognize Change: The Antidote for Anger and Impatience
”Impatience reveals, more than any other vice, that the soul has lost God.” (St. Caterina of Siena)

The primary topic I get asked about on a regular basis is about transformation: “Can someone who chronically abuses others truly change?” I’ve addressed this before, but since there are still so many questions from both readers and clients, I wanted to talk more about what it takes to sincerely rehaul and reform a personality into one that is virtuous, mutually self-giving, and lovingly empathetic. In this article I’m going to focus on two essential virtues needed in order for change to be permanent and praiseworthy: Humility and Patience.

In order to better understand these virtues, we need to understand why their opposites are so soul-draining.

    Share

    Twin Vices: Anger and Impatience
At the heart of coercive control and the desire—whether conscious or not—to gain and maintain power over others lies the dual yet related sins of anger and impatience. Individuals who have allowed themselves to sink into this trap become easily angered, impatient if their target doesn’t “cooperate” in the exact and specified way they desire.

Although untrained in a school of psychology that didn’t exist in her day, fourteenth-century mystic Catherine of Siena (known as Caterina in her native Tuscan language) was an astute student of human behavior. In a 1377 letter to Agnesa Malavolti, a Sienese noblewoman, Caterina wrote:

There is no sin, no vice that gives one such a foretaste of hell in this life as anger and impatience. [The impatient] live in hatred of God and in contempt of their neighbors. They are unwilling to bear or tolerate their neighbors’ shortcomings; they don’t even know how to! Anything that is done or said to them sets them flying, their emotions stirred to anger and impatience like a leaf in the wind. They become unbearable to themselves, because their perverse will is aways gnawing at them, wanting what it cannot have. They are out of sorts with God and with their own rationality. All of this comes from the tree of pride bearing its pith of anger and impatience and making incarnate devils of human beings.

These are very firm statements, and may even sound harsh to our modern sensitivity, so accustomed as we are to watering down the reality of sin. Even so, Caterina’s words are not untrue; they speak a reality that’s better to face than to ignore.

The most common question I hear from clients is “How can I get help for my spouse so he’ll change?” The answer is, sadly, you can’t. As I’ve expressed many times before, we have no power whatsoever to change other people; only they, cooperating with the grace of God, can change themselves.

What would this change look like?

    Santissima Pazienza
In her letter to Agnesa Malavolti St. Caterina speaks in length about patience, a virtue she considers such a sacred quality that she refers to it as “Santissima Pazienza,” or “Holy Patience.”

Santissima Pazienza is the necessary ingredient to permanent soul change, but patience can only be reached through the bridge of humility.

And that’s the tricky part. Someone immersed in a driving desire for power and control, fueled by anger and impatience—”the very pith and sap of pride”—shuns humility. They often claim otherwise, but words are merely that—empty vocalizations—with no foundation unless their actions authentically correspond to that which their lips are proclaiming.

This impatience “befalls them on account of the inordinate love they have for themselves.” Additionally, “there is no remedy for this unless they learn to know themselves and realize that they have offended God. They have to cut down this tree of pride with the sword of humility. This humility nurtures charity in the soul, and charity is a tree of love whose pith is patience and benevolence toward one’s neighbors.”

In Don’t Plant Your Seeds Among Thorns: A Catholic’s Guide to Recognizing and Healing from Domestic Abuse I invest an entire chapter on the topic of changing maladaptive patterns to healthy ones. In that chapter I write:

Authentic change must begin with a foundation of humility … Humility, honesty, openness, and a willingness to confess each and every abusive behavior and attitude are all crucial components of change.

An individual who uses abuse to control their relationship needs to acknowledge their actions and manipulations. They have to own them, admit them, and be determined to reform them. The have to

fully confess everything, in all honesty and without excuse or blame—to you, to anyone else they’ve abused, and to a priest through the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

In order for an individual to transform their life they has to find the Road to Damascus, get on it, and walk. And keep walking all the way to the end, despite the enticing detours and exhaustion that may tempt them to turn back. They can’t remain in their delusional world of power-over, control, twisted mind games, blaming and excuses.

In Acts chapter 9 we read about the abuser Saul, a persecutor of Christians and a man complicit in murder. He hated the followers of Christ and sought to purge them from the world. But then something happened. Something immense, something dazzling, a soul-expanding experience that left Saul prone on the ground with newly awakened love, humility and understanding. On the Road to Damascus, Saul the abuser began his journey toward becoming St. Paul the Apostle.

After his Road to Damascus conversion experience, St. Paul used his God-given free will to authentically remove the abusive patterns in his life in order to completely reform. He gave up his control, his power, and his position, all for Christ.

This is precisely what is needed for authentic soul-change. There is no other path. Only the One.

Humility and patience are the foundations of true charity. Without these, the soul falters and fails, immersing itself in the original sin of pride and presumption. The true litmus test of whether or not someone is changing for the good—and therefore is deserving of our own gift of patience, with the knowledge that it won’t be further abused or trodden underfoot—is the root virtue of Santissima Pazienza. When we look to the Blessed Mother, our foundation for all that is virtuous and patient, we find a model we can rely on as we continue to discern the situations in our lives.

    Special Note:
This article focuses on the perpetrating individual, the one who is using power and control to coerce another as a regular, consistent way of life. When in a situation where mistreatment is at the core of a relationship, it isn’t virtuous to exhibit a so-called “patience” that actually harms us. We shouldn’t be patient with abuse, because that’s a toxic injustice we should never have to endure. Instead, we should be patient with ourselves as we navigate the waters that will steer our boat toward health and healing. I write more about this in my article, “Hard Hearts, Vulnerable Hearts.”

Armed attackers kidnap children from Catholic elementary school in Nigeria

    ACI Africa, Nov 21, 2025 / 17:20 pm

The Diocese of Kontagora in Nigeria has described as “painful and disturbing” the Friday, Nov. 21, kidnapping of children and staff at St. Mary’s Catholic Nursery, Primary, and Secondary Schools.

In a statement shared with ACI Africa, CNA’s news partner in Africa, the diocesan secretary of the Nigerian episcopal see appealed for intensified national action against insecurity.

Father Jatau Luka Joseph said armed attackers invaded St. Mary’s Catholic Primary and Secondary Schools in Papiri, Niger state, in the early hours of Nov. 21, abducting “some pupils, students, teachers, and a security personnel who was badly shot.”

“The incident occurred between 1 a.m. and 3 a.m., causing fear and distress within the school community,” he said.

“The Catholic Diocese of Kontagora strongly condemns the attack and expresses deep concern for the safety of the kidnapped children and their families,” Luka Joseph said.

He added that security agencies were immediately informed and had begun coordinated efforts to ensure the safe rescue and return of the victims.

Bishop Bulus Yohana Dauwa assured the public that the Kontagora Diocese is “actively collaborating with security operatives, community leaders, and government authorities.”

The diocese called on the public to “remain calm, support security efforts, and continue praying for the safe and quick return of all abducted.” It further reaffirmed its commitment to the protection of children and promised to provide further updates as verified information becomes available.

The statement shared by the diocesan secretary reads: “May the Lord grant quick release to those abducted and continue to protect his people from all danger. With prayers and sympathy.”

Nigeria has been battling with a surge of violence orchestrated by gangs, whose members carry out indiscriminate attacks, kidnapping for ransom, and in some cases, killing.

Boko Haram insurgency has been a major challenge in the country since 2009, a group that allegedly aims to turn Africa’s most populous nation into an Islamic nation.

The insecurity situation in many other parts of the country has further been complicated by the involvement of the predominantly Muslim Fulani herdsmen, also referred to as the Fulani Militia.

The Nov. 21 attack and kidnappings follow a series of other abductions that have targeted members of the clergy in Africa’s most populous nation.

On Nov. 17, Father Bobbo Paschal was abducted from his residence when gunmen attacked St. Stephen Parish of Kaduna Archdiocese. During the attack, numerous people were kidnapped, and the brother of one priest, Father Anthony Yero, was killed.

The archdiocese on Nov. 20 refuted circulating social media reports that Paschal had been killed.

On Nov. 18, Dauwa raised concerns about the safety of children in the West African country following the Nov. 17 abduction of 25 school girls from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School in Maga, Kebbi state.

(Story continues below)Subscribe to our daily newsletter

In an interview with ACI Africa, he described the incident as a tragic reminder that the country is no longer “safe for its children.”

Dauwa described the abduction as part of an escalating wave of violence sweeping across Kebbi and parts of Niger state. “It has never been this bad. People sleep in the bush because they have nowhere else to run,” he said.

On Nov. 19, one of the 25 kidnapped girls escaped and is now safe, authorities have confirmed, according to ACI Africa.

The student who escaped arrived home late Monday evening, hours after the kidnapping, according to the school principal, Musa Rabi Magaji.

As the international community expressed concern, Pope Leo XIV addressed the crisis Tuesday evening while departing the papal residence in Castel Gandolfo.

Responding to a question from EWTN News, the Holy Father lamented the ongoing insecurity and called for renewed efforts to protect all civilians.

“In Nigeria, in certain areas, there is certainly a danger for Christians — but for all people,” Pope Leo said, adding: “Christians and Muslims have been slaughtered. There’s a question of terrorism, a question tied to economics and control of land.”

The pope noted that many Christians have died and emphasized that any long-term solution must involve cooperation between religious communities, civil authorities, and the Nigerian government.

“It’s very important to seek a way… to promote authentic religious freedom,” he said.

In July, three minor seminarians were abducted during an armed attack on Immaculate Conception Minor Seminary in Nigeria’s Diocese of Auchi. All three endured months of torture despite pleas with abductors and the paying of ransoms. Two of the seminarians later regained their freedom, while the third died in captivity.

U.S. President Donald Trump recently designated Nigeria as a country of particular concern (CPC) — a move that Father Hyacinth Ichoku, the vice chancellor of Veritas University in Abuja, said accords national leaders of the West African nation an opportunity for international collaboration rather than an act of hostility.

“Anyone who can support us with equipment and help our soldiers in their war against bandits should be encouraged. That is what Trump wants for our country,” Ichoku told ACI Africa on Nov. 7 during Veritas University’s 14th convocation lecture.

This story was first published by ACI Africa, CNA’s news partner in Africa, and has been adapted by CNA.

Saturday, November 22nd Readings Reflection: Memorial of Saint Cecilia, Virgin and Martyr
    Chantal LaFortune
    Nov 22

    READ IN APP

Today is the Feast of St. Cecilia, virgin and martyr. Born in Rome in the latter half of the second century AD, St. Cecilia vowed her virginity to God. However, she was forced to marry a pagan named Valerian. At their wedding, Cecilia sang to God in her heart, and for this reason, she is now venerated as the patron saint of musicians.

Before their marriage was consummated, Cecilia told Valerian that an angel was guarding her virginity. Valerian asked to see the angel, which she said would happen after his Baptism; sure enough, after Valerian converted, he could see the angel. Valerian’s brother soon converted as well, and the two brothers devoted themselves to burying the Christian martyrs who were being killed by the Roman emperor, Turcius Almachius. The holy men were eventually arrested and put to death for their faith.

St. Cecilia boldly and courageously continued to spread the faith. She is credited for having converted over four hundred people in her life. She was eventually arrested herself and sentenced to death by suffocation in the baths. However, she remained unbothered by the heat after being confined there for one day and night. The emperor then ordered her to be decapitated. The executioner struck her neck three times but was unable to sever her head. She died after three days in this state, during which time she continued to preach and pray.

St. Cecilia is buried in the Basilica of Santa Cecilia in Trastevere, Rome, which is built over the site traditionally believed to be her house. She is buried beneath the high altar, where a marble statue depicts the virgin martyr lying on her side with her face toward the ground. Lacerations are seen on her neck. According to reports from the time, this is the way she was found lying when she was exhumed in 1599. At that time, she was also found to be incorrupt, becoming the Church’s first incorruptible. Her body was surrounded with the odor of sanctity, despite her having been dead for hundreds of years.

The Alleluia verse for today’s feast is fitting for the life and death of St. Cecilia: “Our Savior Jesus Christ has destroyed death and brought life to light through the Gospel.” St. Cecilia, her chaste husband, and her brother-in-law all witnessed to the truth of the Gospel through their lives and courageous deaths. They knew that their true home is Heaven, and they were not afraid to give up their earthly lives to witness to the Truth. May St. Cecilia and her holy relatives pray for us, that we too may courageously hold fast to the faith of our fathers, the same faith for which so many martyrs have shed their blood rather than renounce.

Kom in i din uppgift. Sätt den fri. Din tid är nu – fundera på den….

    🙏

Herre, sätt mig fri att tjäna dig för en tid som denna. Jag vill använde det som du lagt ner i mitt liv.

    Amen

Treatise on Purgatory: by Saint Catherine of Genoa Chapter I
    .
How by Comparing it to the Divine Fire which she Felt in Herself, this Soul Understood what Purgatory was like and how the Souls there were Tormented.[1]
    .
The state of the souls who are in Purgatory, how they are exempt
    from all self-love.
    .
This holy Soul[2] found herself, while still in the flesh, placed by the
fiery love of God in Purgatory, which burnt her, cleansing whatever in her needed cleansing, to the end that when she passed from this life she might be presented to the sight of God, her dear Love. By means of this loving fire, she understood in her soul the state of the souls of the faithful who are placed in Purgatory to purge them of all the rust and stains of sin of which they have not rid themselves in this life. And since this Soul, placed by the divine fire in this loving Purgatory, was united to that divine love and content with all that was wrought in her, she understood the state of the souls who are in Purgatory. And she said:
    .
The souls who are in Purgatory cannot, as I understand, choose but be there, and this is by God’s ordinance who therein has done justly. They cannot turn their thoughts back to themselves, nor can they say, “Such sins I have committed for which I deserve to be here “, nor, “I would that I had not committed them for then I would go now to Paradise”, nor, “That one will leave sooner than I”, nor, “I will leave sooner than he”. They can have neither of themselves nor of others any memory, whether of good or evil, whence they would have greater pain than they suffer ordinarily. So happy are they to be within God’s ordinance, and that He should do all which pleases Him, as it pleases Him that in their greatest pain they cannot think of themselves. They see only the working of the divine goodness, which leads man to itself mercifully, so that he no longer sees aught of the pain or good which may befall him. Nor would these souls be in pure charity if they could see that pain or good. They cannot see that they are in pain because of their sins; that sight they cannot hold in their minds because in it there would be an active imperfection, which cannot be where no actual sin can be.
    .
Only once, as they pass from this life, do they see the cause of the
Purgatory they endure; never again do they see it for in another sight of it there would be self. Being then in charity from which they cannot now depart by any actual fault, they can no longer will nor desire save with the pure will of pure charity. Being in that fire of Purgatory, they are within the divine ordinance, which is pure charity, and in nothing can they depart thence for they are deprived of the power to sin as of the power to merit.

    Endnotes
    .
    1. The chapter headings are unlikely to have been written by
Saint Catherine, who would hardly refer to herself as a saint as
do the headings to Chapter IV and IX.
    .
    2. At least the word “holy” and perhaps all this introductory
paragraph were probably added by whoever wrote the chapter
    headings.
